| SOLAM
(Schools On Line @ Middle East) is a project
involving pairs of Jewish and Arab schools in Israel. Schools
Online, http://www.schoolsonline.org
provides funding and support for setting up Internet
communications in the schools and runs teacher/principal/student
computer and Internet training seminars to implement
an interpersonal educational program rich in content.
In 1999 21 schools, 10 Jewish and 11 Arabs were chosen to participate
and 14 of them are continuing. This year 34 new schools, half Arab and
half Jewish are participating. Following a initiatial
workshop/conference the schools work as pairs of Arab and Jewish
schools.
The
22th of November, the schools will convene to decide how best to
continue the project. The projects progress will be presented and the
impact of the situation on the projects discussed. A forum was opened

An
example of the school projects may be found in the work of the school Wady
El-nossor from Um El-Fahem and
Rogozin B. from Kiryat-Ata carried out by the teachers
Muhamad Jabarin and Tali
Fried. They are working on the theme of Sites in Israel. Examples of
such sites are
Nazareth,
Haifa, Kesaria, Zfat, Jerusalem, Jaffa,
Tiberia, Um El-Fahem, Kiryat-Ata, Aco.
Joint
teams of 4 students from both schools will work using information
sources from the Internet, libraries, databases, the Nature
Preservation Authority to work on the following aspects of the chosen
sites:

Religion meanings 5 Stories about this site 6 Archaeology
7 Holly places 8 Industry 9 Research of the sites problems
and possible solutions.
Throughout the project the
pupils will exchange ideas and information through
E-mail, chats, phones. They will also meet in teams in their site
with their parents. At
the end of the year the teachers will choose the nicest
project and will arrange trip to this site.
