Learning and teaching in the Internet
environment - CMC in the Haifa educational system

The CMC revolution that the school system is
undergoing offers opportunities and tools for finding relevant information, teaching aids,
dramatic examples, access to immediate communication between students around the world,
communication for teachers and their colleagues abroad, educational projects,
competitions and more. The educational system has a responsibility for the adequate
integration in the learning culture for the development of life skills of the students.
The MACAM Center assumes a particular responsibility for supporting the correct
integration of technology in the school system.
Two frameworks are currently being deployed:
1. The Computer Labs of 12 schools were connected to the Internet. Five elementary,
3 Junior Highschools and 4 six-year schools. They were chosen as offering very good
potential for success. Two ISP were chosen, Kishurim and Netschool.
2. An experiment with the establishment of a center for the development of basic
skills for a research based learning approach in the Internet. Students from schools which
are not presently connected to the network come to study in the MACAM Center. These are
not the leading schools from Haifa and include an Arab school and two Special Education
schools.
There are both pedagogical and technical elements to be probed in the experiment:
1. To provide recommendations on the preferred alternatives for teaching-learning in an
Internet environment 2. To test the logistical and technical aspects an the best way to
reach a good cost/benefit ratio.
In each school a leading team was established and a class or group
of students chosen by the leading team focus on an specific subjet area.
A steering committee was established for the whole project which enjoys academic
support; installation of equipment and technical support is
provided and a Web site for the project was established. Each school
should prepare a summarising brochure describing its experiences in the
project. The experiment will be summarised and operational decisions derived.
